MacDougall had a forty-seven-year career in journalism, including more than twenty as managing editor of the Charlottetown Guardian. He has received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to journalism on Prince Edward Island, an Atlantic Canada Journalism Award in the lifetime achievement category, and a Heritage Recognition Award from the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation.

MacDougall and his wife, Ola, live in Cornwall, PEI. Their family includes son Graham and his wife, Anita, and children, Jack and Emma; and son Andrew and his wife, Jenneca, and their children, Anderson, Alexander, Emmie, and Lochlan.
